OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) and USA
Softball is pleased to announce that it presented the Central Oklahoma
affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation a check for $12,500 this
past weekend at the closing ceremonies of the Race for the Cure in
Oklahoma City. The money was raised through an eBay auction that put up
for bid uniforms and equipment donated from the USA Softball Women’s
National Team after the pink out game at the KFC World Cup of Softball.
For the second straight year, the Women’s National Team wore pink in a televised game to help raise awareness for breast cancer. The World Cup, which was held July 16-20 in Oklahoma City, featured a pink out game between Canada and the USA. In 2008 the team donated their jerseys and equipment as well for a $25,000 donation bringing the two-year total donated to $37,500.
The auction included the game-worn jersey from each player on the team as well as a jersey signed by the entire USA Softball team that competed at the Canada Cup and the World Cup. Also featured were more than 15 items that were specially made for the USA Softball Players to wear during July’s pink game at the World Cup. The specialty items included Monica Abbott (Salinas, Calif.) and Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) cleats, Caitlin Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) batting gloves and a Jennie Finch (La Mirada, Calif.) hair ribbon with her signature logo. A jersey worn and signed by Finch drew the largest bid at $1,625.00.
ASA staff members Julie Bartel and Holly Krivokapich participated in the Race for the Cure then presented the check to Executive Director Lorna Palmer at the closing ceremonies.
“We would like to thank ASA and USA Softball for their continued support. Their generosity will benefit the effort to fight breast cancer which affects us all,” said Palmer.
About the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® foundation
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.
That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we’re working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, we have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
