USA Softball Edges Tennessee 4-2
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Despite giving up an early lead, the USA Softball Women’s National (21-1) beat the University of Tennessee 4-2 this afternoon as part of the KFC Bound 4 Beijing Tour in Knoxville, Tenn. Monica Abbott (Salinas, Calif.), Lady Vol alum, went the distance for her first complete game and sixth win of the tour totaling a 11 strikeout performance.
The 6’3” lefty allowed two hits through the first two innings each solo home runs from Tonya Callahan and Jennifer Lapicki to give #11Tennessee a 2-0 lead into the third.
The U.S. cut the lead to 2-1 in the third when Caitlin Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) scored on a sac fly by Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, Calif.). Lowe recorded a double to reach, her second of the game.
Mendoza gave the team the runs it needed to take the lead in the fifth with a two-run homerun to right field to plate Natasha Watley (Irvine, Calif.) who hit a single to reach base. Kelly Kretschman (Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.) hit her fourth home run of the tour with a shot between the centerfield flag poles to give the team a security run and a 4-2 lead going into the sixth.
“Today was a great atmosphere with some great fans and the facility is remarkable,” said head coach Mike Candrea. “This tour prepares us for the Olympic Games where we will face tough situations like we did today. To be honest I wish we had more games like today to prepare us for China.”
Tennessee looked to score in the bottom of the seventh when Callahan reached first on an error by first baseman Andrea Duran (Selma, Calif.). The tying run then came to the place, however, an Abbott strikeout and a groundout to shortstop left Callahan stranded and gave the team a 4-2 victory.
Through 22 games, Mendoza leads the U.S. arsenal batting .481 while Duran boasts a team high 33 RBI.
On Sunday, the U.S. will travel to Johnson City, Tenn. as they take on Milligan College at 2 p.m. EST.
