OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.– The UCLA Bruins (31-3) remain the No.1 softball team in the Nation according to the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Collegiate Poll announced today by the Amateur Softball Association. UCLA opened up Pac-10 Conference play with a perfect 3-0 record to remain at No.1 for the second consecutive week with 10 first-place votes.
The Bruins went 5-0 on the week including shutting out Oregon State, 3-0, and sweeping Oregon, 2-0 and 12-0 (5). No.2 Arizona State (39-2) received seven first-place votes after going 5-0 including two wins over then No. 5 Stanford including a 13-inning-game which ended in a 3-0 SunDevil win.
Alabama (31-3) and Florida (40-2) tied for third-place with one and two first-place votes, respectively. Florida continueditsSEC Conferenceplaywith six-straight wins including sweeping then No. 8 LSU in three games.
No. 5 Michigan (29-3) entered the Top 5 after opening Big Ten play with a 4-0 record, outscoring opponents 29-2.
No.9 Houston (31-4) and No.10 Fresno State (32-5) made the leap into the Top 10 for the first time this season. Both teams remain perfect in conference play with Houston at 9-0 in Conference USA and Fresno State 2-0 in the WAC.
No.22 Virginia Tech (25-10) entered the Top 25 after receiving votes last week. Virginia Tech pulled off a major upset to open their week with a 1-0 defeat of the USA National Team, its first loss in exhibition play since 1996. They also went 2-1 against Maryland for a 7-2 ACC record.
Baylor (18-12) fell out of the Top 25 after earning a No.19 ranking last week. Baylor suffered three losses in conference play as well as a loss to Texas State to go 0-4 on the week.
